City of Joliet issued the following announcement on Feb. 24.
2nd Annual Black History Celebration: Harriet Tubman - "Guiding Us To Better Places"
Join us on the journey of Harriet Tubman, a true American hero who brought the enslaved to freedom and saved lives. Her inspiration continues today, as seen in this original three-part presentation, enjoyable for students and adults.
Our first stop will be a short stage production where we meet Harriet Tubman, portrayed by Shayla Day-Davenport. Joliet resident Shayla may be recognized from Empire's Season 2, the prison guard greeting "new prisoners" at the old Joliet prison's "Night Behind Bars" last fall and many appearances in park productions.
Our second stop will be motivational words by Karen C. McElrath, who takes Harriet's struggle and turns it into inspiration to light one's own journey today. Karen, founder of #KMc Business & Communications, is a certified professional life coach, returning guest speaker at the park's "Light the Fire" Women's Conference and actor in park productions.
Our third and final stop will be a question and answer time for the audience.
The event will be one hour, in compliance with Illinois Learning Standards (ILS) and ideal for student field trips. Concessions will be available for sale. The lobby opens one hour before showtime.
