Aurora Tree Board discusses school-related business at meeting

The City of Aurora Tree Board held a meeting on Monday, April 18.

The board meets at 1:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Stover Visitor Center, 1000 Ray Moses Drive.

Here are the meeting minutes as provided by the board:

Date: April 18, 2016

Location: Stover Visitor Center – 1000 Ray Moses Drive, Aurora IL 60505

Time: 1:00 pm

Roll Call:

Present: Mollie Millen, Dan Anderson, Bill Pauley, Rosario DeLeon, Daryl Devick, Susan Johnson

Absent: Cathy Hayen, Alexandra Voigt, Ed Sieben

Guest: Ken Maurice, Joe Hopp

Meeting called to order at 1:15 pm.

March 21, 2016 meeting minutes were approved.

Public Comments: none.

Board Business:

a. 2016 Arbor Day Celebration

 Ken M. gave an update on Arbor Day plans.

 Four (4) school events are confirmed, exact times to be determined:

East Aurora High School – 9 am

O’Donnell Elementary School – 10 am

Waubonsie Valley High School – 11 am

Herget Middle School – 1 pm

 Confirmed that each school will have 2 trees planted, JULIE has been notified

 Schools will receive Benefits of Tree Tags

 Free trees will be handed out at each school: 100 fir trees, 100 swamp white oaks, 100 burr oak

trees

b. Spring 2016 Parkway Trees:

 Rosario D. gave an update, planting begins week of 5/2/16

 75 cost share trees have been ordered

c. Tree Planting in Confined Spaces (Sidewalk Wells):

 Joe Hopp spoke about trees planted in sidewalk wells in downtown areas

 Overwatering and lack of drainage is the common cause of frequent tree mortality

 Roughly 200 trees are located in the central business district

 Discussed several sites with challenging planting conditions and the need to develop best practice standards including: tree species best adaptable to confined root zones and low oxygen levels – understanding that lifetime will be relatively short compared to normal parkway trees.

d. Tree Board Membership:

 Discussed Jim Reich’s resignation from the tree board and need for a replacement
