Illinois Senate Republican Leader John Curran expressed his congratulations to Cardinal Robert Prevost, who has been elected as the new pope. This marks a historic moment as Cardinal Prevost becomes the first American to lead the Catholic Church globally.

Senator Curran, representing Downers Grove, shared his pride in seeing an Illinoisan rise to such a significant position within the Church. “Congratulations to the Southside’s own Cardinal Robert Prevost on being elected as the new pope,” said Curran. He continued by expressing his hopes for Pope Leo XIV’s leadership: “I am beyond proud that Church leaders chose an Illinoisan as the first American to lead the Catholic Church around the world.”

The senator extended his well-wishes for Pope Leo XIV’s tenure, hoping he will have “strength, clarity, and purpose” in guiding Catholics worldwide. The election of an American pope is a notable event for both Illinois and the global Catholic community.
