Illinois Senate Minority Leader John Curran and Deputy Leader Sue Rezin have urged Governor J.B. Pritzker and the Democratic Majority to avoid raising taxes during the upcoming veto session. The Republican leaders voiced concerns that Democrats may seek additional revenue by decoupling from recently enacted federal tax benefits.
“The Democrats plan to increase taxes on the economic engines of our state, causing more tax headaches for the people of Illinois,” said Curran.
According to Senate Republicans, potential changes could impact several tax provisions that benefit Illinois businesses. These include a new deduction for manufacturers building facilities in Illinois, incentives for research and development cost recovery, and an expanded small business deduction.
Senator Rezin also highlighted concerns about anticipated increases in energy and transit costs. “At a time when working Illinoisans are already paying more for everything, from utilities to groceries to property taxes, the last thing they need is another round of bad policies that drive up costs and drive out jobs,” Rezin said.
John Curran, who was elected to represent Illinois’ 41st Senate District in 2017, succeeded Christine Radogno as state senator.
