The Park Forest Police Department announced on March 9 that it will increase traffic enforcement from March 13 through the morning of March 23 to address impaired driving during St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

The initiative is part of a statewide campaign, in partnership with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation, called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI.” The effort aims to reduce incidents involving alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs as communities prepare for celebrations throughout the week and surrounding weekends.

“With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday this year, we expect celebrations throughout the entire week — plus the weekends before and after,” said Park Forest Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow. “Celebrate responsibly: Before you head out, secure a sober ride home. Take responsibility for your safety and the safety of others—plan now, don’t wait.”

During this period, officers will focus on identifying impaired drivers as well as enforcing seat belt use, speed limits, and distracted driving laws. Nighttime patrols will be especially visible due to higher risks associated with reduced seat belt use and increased likelihood of impaired-driving crashes at night. The department reported making 140 arrests for driving under the influence in 2025—a 59% rise from the previous year—highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead by designating sober drivers or arranging alternative transportation options such as public transit or ride-share services before leaving home. Authorities also warn that impairment can affect not only drivers but also pedestrians and cyclists, increasing their risk of being struck by vehicles at night.

Vallow said if you see someone trying to drive impaired, take the keys and help them arrange a safe ride—don’t let them endanger themselves or others. If you spot an impaired driver, call 911 to report it right away.

According to the official website, Village of Park Forest promotes community health through dedicated commissions and programs while supporting sustainability efforts in town planning. The village operates under a council-manager government with a mayor and six trustees as its governing body according to its official website. It has received recognition for leadership in sustainability by supporting national climate protection agreements according to its official website.

The campaign is funded by federal traffic safety grants administered by IDOT.
