Park Forest Detective Tim Jones, who survived a critical injury in a 2016 line-of-duty shooting and became a symbol of resilience for the community, has died at age 34. The Park Forest Police Department announced his death on Wednesday.
Jones was shot multiple times on March 19, 2016, while taking an armed suspect into custody after responding to a break-in. The injuries were severe, with gunshots to his neck and jaw. Doctors warned that he was unlikely to survive the initial days following the incident.
“In March of 2016, Tim’s life changed forever when he was critically wounded in the line of duty,” the Park Forest Police Department stated on Facebook. “We were told he wouldn’t survive, but Tim had other plans. Day after day, year after year, he pushed through challenges most of us can’t imagine.”
A native of Tinley Park and second-generation police officer, Jones joined the Park Forest Police Department in June 2015. His recovery involved numerous surgeries and years of rehabilitation. The phrase “Tim Strong” became widely used by supporters as a sign of encouragement for Jones and his family. Community members organized fundraisers and displayed blue porch lights in solidarity.
“Tim will always be an inspiration, and a reminder of what courage, resilience, and heart truly look like,” the department said. “We remain incredibly proud of the fight he gave.”
Jones received ongoing recognition from village leaders during board meetings. In 2018, part of Lakewood Boulevard was named Honorary Officer Tim Jones Way in his honor. He continued to hold an honorary detective position at the police department.
The police department thanked residents for their support over nearly ten years: “From every blue porch light to the viral #TimStrong hashtag, we saw our community rally around Tim,” according to their statement. “We are truly grateful.”
The Village asked residents to keep Jones’ family in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this time. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
The Village of Park Forest operates under a council-manager government with a mayor and six trustees as its governing body according to its official website. The municipality provides various programs supporting health initiatives and civic engagement within the community as described online.
