The New Lenox Police Department announced on Mar. 16 that it will host a free women’s self-defense class on April 17 at Jung’s Champion Taekwondo, located at 2433 Joliet Hwy in New Lenox. The event is open to all women ages 18 and older, with preference given to New Lenox residents. Registration is required as only 40 spots are available.
The class aims to help participants build confidence, increase awareness, and learn practical skills for personal safety. According to the announcement, attendees will be taught basic self-defense moves for real-life situations, strategies to avoid danger, and techniques suitable for all skill levels. No prior experience is necessary.
This initiative reflects the Village of New Lenox’s broader efforts to foster community pride and improve quality of life through effective municipal services and guidance, according to its strategic plan. The village also promotes patriotism through programs such as the ‘Avenue of Flags’ along U.S. Route 30, as noted on the community history page.
The Village of New Lenox operates under a board of trustees and a mayor elected for four-year terms, according to the government page. It functions as a municipal entity focused on local governance, as described in its government overview.
New Lenox was named after Lenox, New York following a request by a railroad official and was legally incorporated as a village in Illinois on Oct. 4, 1946, according to the official history.
Registration for the self-defense class can be completed online at www.newlenox.net/WomensSelfDefenseRegistration. For questions about the event, interested individuals may email kkioltyka@newlenox.net.
