Lewis University is inviting girls who will be entering grades 6 through 12 to participate in its upcoming girls volleyball camp, according to a March 18 announcement. The camp will begin with check-in on Monday, July 6, between 12:30 and 1:30 PM, and continue with another check-in opportunity on Tuesday, July 7, from 8:00 to 9:00 AM. Registration is required for the event, and the application deadline is set for July 3 or until all spots are filled.

The camp offers an opportunity for local students to develop their volleyball skills during the summer. It is open to families in Fairmont School District 89, which represents Will County and includes Fairmont School as part of its district according to the Illinois Report Card.

Fairmont School District 89 serves students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade and enrolled a total of 322 students during the 2019-2020 school year. The district is located in Fairmont within Will County according to the Illinois Report Card. Demographically, the district’s student population is composed of approximately 12.7 percent White, 38.5 percent Black, and 46 percent Hispanic students; Asian students make up about 0.3 percent according to the ISBE.

Staffing data shows that Fairmont School District employs a total of thirty teachers with an average salary of $47,800 before pension contributions; women comprise about eighty percent of this workforce while men account for nearly twenty percent. Notably, there were no teachers with more than ten absences in a school year according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

Financially, Fairmont School District spent $21,521 per student in the year 2020 for a total expenditure of $6,929,762 according to the Illinois Report Card. However, challenges remain regarding attendance: ninety students were classified as ‘chronically truant’—meaning they missed at least five percent of mandated school days without valid excuse—resulting in a chronic truancy rate of twenty-eight percent compared to a statewide average of nearly ten percent according to the Illinois State Board of Education.

The Lewis University girls volleyball camp aims to provide additional engagement opportunities for area youth during summer break.
