Illinois State Representative Nicole La Ha has introduced a bill that would require human trafficking resource signs to be posted in rest area restrooms across the state. The initiative aims to increase awareness and provide assistance to potential victims.
La Ha explained her motivation for the bill, stating, “We know that human traffickers utilize the state’s rest areas and this can become a point when victims find help.” She wants the resource signs, which are already mandated under previous Illinois law, to be more visible at these locations.
Currently, Illinois law requires businesses with liquor licenses, primary airports, rail stations, bus stations, adult entertainment facilities, truck stops, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, job recruitment centers, and massage parlors to display posters containing information on how to get help. These posters include hotline numbers and details about recognizing signs of forced labor or sex trafficking.
“Wherever human trafficking is occurring, we must work to stop it,” said La Ha. “I continue our work to shore up our laws addressing this problem; providing victims help to recover and bringing traffickers to justice.”
La Ha was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 82nd House District in 2023. She succeeded John Egofske in this role.
