The Village of Park Forest is under a Fire Weather Watch from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, as announced by the National Weather Service in Chicago. The alert comes amid forecasts of unusually warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds that increase the risk of fires across northern Illinois.
Forecasts predict high temperatures in the 60s, relative humidity dropping to 15 percent, and southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. The watch covers Cook and Will counties along with other nearby areas.
The National Weather Service has warned that these conditions could cause any fire that starts to ignite quickly and spread rapidly. While larger vegetation may still have some moisture, officials highlight that dry grass and brush are especially vulnerable to fast-moving fires.
Park Forest Fire Chief Mark Cotrano advised residents to take precautions during this period. “These are the types of conditions where a small spark can turn into a fast-moving grass or brush fire,” Cotrano said. “With humidity this low and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour, fires can spread before crews even arrive on scene.”
Cotrano recommended against burning yard waste, encouraged proper disposal of smoking materials, and asked people not to use equipment outdoors that might produce sparks. “We’re asking the community to be proactive,” he said. “Secure trailer chains, be cautious with grills, and never leave any open flame unattended. A Fire Weather Watch means the potential is there, and we all play a role in preventing a dangerous situation.”
Officials also encourage residents to stay updated on weather developments throughout Wednesday.
