Gabby Shanahan, candidate for Illinois House District 97, announced her admiration for Michelle Smith as part of Women’s History Month. Smith, who lives in Plainfield, was recognized for her commitment to area schools and businesses.

In her post, Shanahan wrote: "This week’s woman we honor for #WomensHistoryMonth is Michelle Smith! Michelle is one of the most community-oriented people I know. She is an advocate for strong schools, safe communities, and small businesses. Thank you for all you do, Michelle (and Brian!)"

As part of her Facebook update, Shanahan shared a March 7 post from the Plainfield Neighbors' Facebook page. The post read: "This month I am delighted to introduce to you, dear PLAINFIELD NEIGHBORS, outstanding residents - the Smith family. I'm confident that you will find joy in learning about their journey, their dedication to volunteering, and their philosophy centered around "contributing to the overall well-being and vibrancy of our community." Their story is truly remarkable and is certainly a family worth getting to know. Stay happy PLAINFIELD NEIGHBORS!"

The article, posted on Facebook and shared by Shanahan, indicates that Smith and her husband Brian have resided in Plainfield for over 25 years. They have four children, two grandchildren, and two English Mastiffs. According to images shared by the Plainfield Neighbors website, they own multiple companies, including BSPI Inc., MM Mona LLC (commercial real estate), and Redhead Rentals LLC (commercial real estate). They also possess commercial real estate properties in Plainfield and across the country.

Shanahan, herself, has been a longtime resident of Plainfield. A former competitive figure skater and a graduate of the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill., she holds a bachelor’s degree, with a double major in U.S. history and political science, as well as a Master of Business Administration, according to her campaign website’s "Meet Gabby" page.

She holds the position of national committeewoman for Illinois in the Young Republican National Federation and is the county chair of the Kendall Young Republicans, as per her biography on her campaign website.
