Citizens for Pi has issued the following press release:

Plainfield, IL – Will County Treasurer candidate and Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) member Raj Pillai further elevated his calls against current treasurer Tim Brophy for allowing a nearly $500,000 no-bid contract be awarded to the former VAC superintendent’s friend for “marketing” rather than being spent to support our county’s veterans.

As a veteran and CPA, Pillai watched as public funds for veterans were mismanaged because the current treasurer lacks the professional qualifications to provide the necessary oversight as allowed by law. A trained CPA like Pillai would’ve had checks and balances in place that would have stopped this travesty.

“When I first heard about this, I immediately joined the VAC to ensure taxpayers had a trained CPA protecting their tax dollars and veterans had a fellow former service member fighting for them,” Pillai said. “And that’s what I’ve been doing, shining a spotlight on this scandal to ensure taxpayers and veterans get the answers they deserve.”

It wasn’t Treasurer Brophy or any other government official who uncovered this corruption. It was only discovered because of a citizen FOIA, which has since led to the resignation of the superintendent and an FBI investigation. Taxpayers and veterans deserve better from their government.

“To be entrusted with the taxpayers’ money is a massive responsibility. Will County needs a treasurer who is prepared for that responsibility,” Pillai said. “The incumbent treasurer is not a CPA, he’s a politician and an insider who is not professionally qualified for the role. I’m a CPA, a veteran, and an outsider with a proven history of protecting public funds.”

Pillai has spent the last 17 years of his career dedicated to improving the fiscal stability of families, organizations, and major corporations, which includes work in auditing, accounting, and financial solutions. Prior, he served our country in the United States Navy for nearly 10 years.
