University Park FD responds to 53 fires in 2017

University Park Fire Department responded to 165 calls in 2017 - 4.6 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in University Park included 53 fires - 41 structure fires, five vehicle fires and seven other fires.

In all, the department saw $64,501 in fire loss - or about $1,217 per fire.

The department also received 112 false calls, including four malicious calls and 108 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related injuries.

The University Park Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 15 active employees and 19 retired or inactive employees, was $248,097 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $5,770 for every fire in 2016.
