Analysis: Sales tax funded 11 percent of Village of Bolingbrook budget in 2016

The Village of Bolingbrook's local sales tax brought in $14,602,882 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Bolingbrook, population 73,383, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 11 percent of total revenue that year.

Bolingbrook levies a 1.5 percent sales tax. The average of six municipalities in Will County is 1.04 percent. The high is 1.75 percent; the low is 0 percent.

Will County Gazette analyzed the sales tax collections in six Will County municipalities and found they generated a total of $18,792,414 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 8 percent spent by local government.
